About
Early History
The pub has existed for well over a century, likely much longer. The Methley Archive holds records and images of the inn dating back to the early 1900’s. A large sign above the central doorway bore the name of the licensee at the time, Thomas Saunders Vicarage, and his license to sell beers and spirits.
Survival
While many other Methley pubs such as The Queen Inn, The Royal Oak, and The United Kingdom have closed or been converted into residential properties, The Commercial continues to operate, maintaining its long-standing connection to the village community.
Savile Pit
Shafts for the Savile Pit were sunk in 1874 at the west end of Main Street, Mickletown, an area dominated by the mine’s tall, smoke-pouring chimney. The proximity meant grime and smoke blackened everything nearby. The Commercial was a mainstay for miners until its untimely closure of the pit.
